Toward a new medical philosophy… a personal text.
👥⌛️👨⚖️ The outdated culture: The “doctor-as-god”… a strict and unapproachable figure, a person who radiates authority, respect, and occasionally fear. As the only one possessing the necessary knowledge, the doctor guides through commands. Patients, for their part, place their hopes entirely on the doctor to solve their problem, with little room for anything else. A relationship of trust and equality, proper professional behavior, a human-centered approach, and the possibility of critical assessment by the patient are not considered essential.
✅ Modern practices
🧑⚕️👨👩👧👦 Shared decision making: The doctor is the scientist who identifies the patient’s problem and analyzes the ways to manage it. As a professional, they make recommendations and propose alternative therapeutic options, weighing advantages and disadvantages. After discussion, doctor and patient often decide jointly on the next steps. In this way, the patient takes an active role, embraces both the problem and its management, and is more likely to follow what is required even without regular medical supervision.
🫂🎯🥇🕵️ Human-centered approach and individualization: Regardless of doctor or patient, mutual respect and equality are non-negotiable. Building a relationship of trust with the patient is one of the doctor’s main responsibilities and is never a given. The doctor takes into account each patient’s temperament, personal preferences and concerns. Naturally, there is no cure-all for any disease. Every patient and every problem is something unique that requires specific management. Today, there are clinical guidelines for everything. The doctor should not “hide” behind them but should utilize them in such a way, so as to achieve the optimal outcome for each case.
📚📈🌏 Lifelong learning and scientific evidence: Experience, skill and the ability to manage complex cases are qualities that are difficult for a doctor to acquire—they are valuable and will always be necessary. However, knowledge never ends. What is true today may not be true tomorrow. Therefore, it is essential for doctors to remain updated on recent developments and to make recommendations based on the highest-quality available research data. After all, global experience will always be greater than individual experience.
🔥💯 Medical services that still retain even part of the outdated culture and do not follow all modern practices cannot be considered high-quality.
